President Ramos Horta congratulates FRETILIN on its respect for democracy

Timor-Leste (East Timor) President José Ramos Horta has congratulated the majority Fretilin party on its efforts to “keep the peace” during the presidential election campaign.

"FRETILIN demonstrated its maturity and respect for Timorese democracy by maintaining a peaceful campaign and by accepting the results of the presidential elections," President Ramos Horta told a FRETILIN meeting held in Dili on 11 June 2007

"I congratulate FRETILIN and its leadership on their effort to keep the peace during the elections," President Ramos Horta told at the dialogue meeting led by FRETILIN General Secretary Dr Mari Alkatiri, senior FRETILIN leaders and government members.

"During my visit to Indonesia I informed President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono about the great example set by FRETILIN and its leaders during and after the presidential elections," he said.

Dr Alkatiri at the meeting said FRETILIN is ready to collaborate with President Ramos Horta to bring stability to Timor-Leste and to continue to work for the development of the nation.

"FRETILIN is the only party that can guarantee respect for the freedom and sovereignty of the President of the nation by collaborating to achieve greater developmental results and by allowing the President to do his work," said Dr Alkatiri.

Dr Alkatiri continued: "Since the crisis started FRETILIN has acted with tolerance and has shown it is willing to contribute to solving the crisis and bringing back stability to the nation, and we will keep doing so."
